How does Doordash figure out base pay?

To figure out a dasher's final payment for a delivery order, Doordash has to add up the base pay that they are offering for the order, the customer tip, as well as any promotions that are going on. Most of the time, there is no promotion happening, so it is basically the Doordash base pay and customer tip that makes up the final amount that a dasher will get paid to complete a particular order.

How does Doordash determine how much base pay is offered for an order?

Doordash states that they will pay $2 to $10 of base pay for each order. They also state that the amount will be based on the estimated time, the distance and desirability of the order. They lastly state that the base pay for an order will not change based on the customer's tip amount.

A longer Doordash order will have a higher base pay?

Well, according to how Doordash explains it; yes. If the travel distance is long, for example 10 miles, the base pay for that call should be a lot more than for a call that is two miles. When receiving an offer, dashers can see the amount of miles they will have to travel to make the delivery.

A longer estimated time for a Doordash order will have a higher base pay?

If Doordash estimates that an order will take long, the base pay may be more than usual. I am not sure how Doordash estimates this. It could be the information that they receive from live GPS. Maybe they can tell when an area in congested with traffic. Maybe they know that a certain merchant usually has a longer than normal wait. However they get their information, a longer estimated time should have a higher base pay for the dasher.

A less desirable Doordash order will have a larger base pay?

According to Doordash, a less desirable order will receive a higher base pay. What constitutes an undesirable order is not really explained. Apparently, it is an order that most dashers would not want to do. Could be a three mile order when a customer didn't tip. Maybe Doordash will have to increase the base pay for the order to entice a dasher to do the order.

What is the average Doordash base pay?

I personally did a little test for a couple of weeks by keeping track of the base pay on all my orders. During these two weeks, I did 130 dashes. The average base pay for all of my orders was $3. I very rarely received anything above $5. Only one of my orders had a high base pay of $7 and that delivery was six miles in total. Four of my orders were for $5, and all the rest were below that.

If another dasher were to keep track, their experience may be different. But, I'm pretty sure that they would have a similar experience. I can only speak on my experience. Maybe different regions will have different results? Who knows.

Does Doordash determine the base pay based on a customer's tip?

A lot of people think this may be the case even though Doordash clearly states that they do not. Even if Doordash did do this, it would be very difficult to prove. If they were doing this, it would be almost the same thing as them stealing tips. It would be a very sly way of thievery. I have written an an article just on this subject. Feel free to read it here.

  1. Shopping orders typically have a much higher base pay compared to food delivery. Most of my shopping orders typically have a base pay between $5-$7. The highest I've seen for a base pay shopping order was $9.25
